We rely on enzymes and "friendly" bacteria
in our bodies to break down our food, kill off
"harmful" bacteria, keep our immune response
strong, and balance our acid/alkaline levels.
Certain foods provide us with "friendly" bacteria
and enzymes. Since these two groups can be
taken at the same time, we started two decades
ago to combine them in our "Flora-Zymes" formula.
This has been a successful response for people
suffering from irritable bowel symptoms,
digestive upset, excessive gas, bloating and
irregularity issues.
The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
definition of probiotics:
"...are live microorganisms administered in adequate amounts which confer
a beneficial health effect on the host."
"The microorganisms referred to in this definition are non-pathogenic bacteria (small, single celled
organisms which do not promote or cause disease). They are considered "friendly germs," due to benefits
to the colon and the immune system. The word probiotic is a compound of a Latin and a Greek word; it
means "favorable to life." Probiotics is also sometimes used to refer to a form of nutritional therapy based
on eating probiotic foods and dietary supplements."
The Question of Probiotic Potency and Refrigeration:
Refrigeration of probiotics is necessary if they are in the liquid or wet form. Dried versions need
refrigeration if the moisture content is above 5% ... our probiotics are 99% dry, placed in capsules
(further preventing moisture contact) and therefore, require no refrigeration. Products that are loose
in a jar may start out below 5% moisture content but are easily exposed to water in the air ... these are
better stored in the refrigerator.
At this low moisture, the probiotic becomes dormant (is not active). When introduced to the stomach
acid in the body, the capsule is broken down and the probiotic is re-activated. With Restore, you don't
have to worry about freshness or potency!
The Question of Probiotics Surviving the Stomach Acid:
Our probiotics and enzymes are essentially dry. We culture our probiotics and enzymes from organic
plant-derived sources. We never use animal or glandular probiotics. Plant sourced probiotics can
survive a higher pH than animal or glandular-derived probiotics.
The benefit to you is that our capsule is naturally broken down by your stomach acid, yet the probiotic
survives its high pH to enter your intestines where it belongs. Some products are hard-coated tablets
designed to survive the stomach acid to get into the intestines, however, are they utilized by the
intestines there? The stomach is meant for breaking down food. If the stomach cannot break down a
specially-coated tablet, we question whether the intestines are able to benefit from it or do they merely
push the tablet through? Kind of like that corn-on-the-cob you wolfed down at the picnic, or the quarter
you ate to freak out your mom....
